Leeds Tykes
Leeds Tykes Powergen Cup winners 2005

In the annals of Leeds Tykes’ history, the 2005 Powergen Cup Final stands as a monumental achievement. On 16 April 2005, at the iconic Twickenham Stadium, Leeds Tykes faced Bath Rugby in a match that would etch their names into rugby folklore.

Despite a challenging Premiership season, where the threat of relegation loomed large, the Tykes showcased unparalleled determination and resilience throughout the cup run. Their journey to the final was marked by tenacity, setting the stage for an unforgettable climax against a formidable Bath side.

The final commenced with an electrifying atmosphere, as fans from both sides filled the stadium with anticipation. Leeds Tykes seized the initiative early on, with South African international André Snyman and centre Chris Bell delivering pivotal tries that stunned the opposition and thrilled the crowd. Gordon Ross, who will be in attendance at the upcoming reunion, further solidified the team’s advantage, contributing crucial points with his reliable boot. His exceptional performance not only steered the team strategically but also earned him the Man of the Match accolade.

Anecdotes from that day highlight the unyielding spirit of the Tykes’ defence. Time and again, they thwarted Bath’s advances, withstanding immense pressure to maintain their lead. As described by The Guardian: “Leeds had never won a cup of tea. Most of their life is spent struggling against the drop. Now they are the Powergen Cup winners.”

The final moments of the match were a testament to Leeds’ grit and determination. As the clock wound down, Bath intensified their efforts, but the Tykes’ defence held firm. The final whistle signalled a historic 20-12 victory for Leeds Tykes, marking their first major trophy win and a momentous occasion for Yorkshire rugby. Mark Regan and Diego Albanese, both integral figures in that triumph, have confirmed their attendance at the reunion and will no doubt share their memories of that incredible victory.
