We are sad to announce that Viv Barley died on Thursday 3 September after a nine-week stay in St Gemma’s.
He was one of the central characters in the formation of Leeds Rugby Union in 1992 and then the merger to form West Park Leeds in 2006. He served many fruitful years on the committees of Headingley FC, Leeds RUFC and West Park Leeds RUFC and fully embraced the progress made.
Viv was also on the committee of Yorkshire RFU and held the role of President, which enabled him to ‘open’ the new clubhouse at The Sycamores on 30 August 2008.
Viv, born in Guiseley in 1943, lived with his wife Cheryl in Roundhay for over 45 years. He rose through the teaching ranks to become a headmaster well before retirement.
He will be missed by sons Jonathan and Matthew, daughter Eleanor and his many friends from around the county.
His funeral is on 8 October at 13:00 at Rawdon Crematorium, with further details to follow.
