Rugby history comes to Headingley this October with John Bevan: Team Player – From Lions to League. A new play tells the story of three pivotal years in the life of Welsh rugby legend John Bevan, from the British Lions’ famous 1971 series win over the All Blacks, through the iconic 1973 Barbarians match, to his decision to switch codes and play rugby league for Warrington.
There’s a Leeds Tykes connection too, with Club President Gary Hetherington having played against Bevan during his rugby career. Gary has been supporting the production – and recalls that he could never quite catch Bevan!
The 1971 Lions squad also included John Spencer, who played for Headingley and captained England during the 1970s. Spencer is now president of The Barbarians.
The play comes to the Lewis Jones Room at AMT Headingley Stadium on 16 and 17 October at 19:00, with tickets priced at £15. Find out more.
