Leeds’ lacklustre start leads to large loss
Leeds Tykes fell to a 17-42 defeat at home to Birmingham Moseley, as a slow start and a series of costly errors left the hosts too much to do despite flashes of determined attack. Moseley struck early, using their dominant maul to drive Ben Pogson over for the opener. Leeds were repeatedly put under pressure at the line-out, and when possession was spilled on halfway, Elliott Creed broke through to release Perry Humphreys for the second try. Moments later, a chip ahead held up perfectly for Aquile Smith. Jack Jolly, who was accurate from the tee throughout the match, stretched the gap as Leeds battled to find rhythm, with misfiring line-outs and handling issues preventing sustained pressure.
Leeds struggled to generate sustained phases, with several promising carries halted by knock-ons or penalties at the breakdown. Ollie Stedman finished another well-constructed attack for the visitors before the Tykes finally responded: Alex Pleasants crashed over from close range following a period of pressure inside the 22, converted by Seremaia Bai Turagabeci. But Moseley capitalised on a series of infringements before the interval, with Smith claiming his second try from a blindside move to lead 7-35 at half-time.
After the break, Leeds showed renewed energy, winning repeat penalties and enjoying their best spell of territory. Yet the increasingly heavy rain disrupted handling for both sides. Moseley remained clinical, with Smith claiming his second try from a blindside move, and Will Safe intercepting a wide pass to run in uncontested.
Leeds, however, continued to push and were rewarded when Lucas Walsh finished a sharp counterattack. Moments later, Sebi Krippner darted through from distance, weaving past defenders to score Leeds’ third. Despite that late lift, Leeds could not find the fourth try that would have secured a try bonus point. While the side showed determination in the final quarter, the early stages of the match ultimately proved decisive, with Moseley’s organisation and physicality setting the tone to secure a five-point win.
Speaking after the match, Director of Rugby Pete Seabourne said: “I’m disappointed with the result. Birmingham came here and played well. In the first half, we weren’t at the races; we didn’t get going. We did better in the second half and got oursleves back in the game by being in the position to get a 4-try bonus point but we blew that.
“Lots to work on and some hard work to put in for next week’s game at Blackheath. It was a frustrating day at the office.”
Ben Dixon, who captained the side, added: “There is disappointment to not back up the 2 wins on the bounce that we had. I don’t think the week off helped with our momentum. In the second half we fronted up and showed what we can do but it was disappointing in general.”
