Leeds Tykes are proud to welcome the Victoria Cross Trust as a sponsor of Director of Rugby Pete Seabourne for the 2026/27 season.
The partnership brings together two organisations with a shared commitment to recognising dedication, service and the values of teamwork, courage and respect.
The Victoria Cross Trust works to preserve the memory of those awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) – the highest award for valour in the British honours system – by restoring and maintaining graves, memorials and tributes to these extraordinary individuals.
Preserving stories of courage
The Trust’s team of veteran volunteers works tirelessly to ensure that the names and stories of VC recipients are not forgotten. Their work also extends to restoring military memorials honouring those who served their country across numerous conflicts.
Keith Lumley, Chair of Trustees at the Victoria Cross Trust, said: “Our team of veteran volunteers strive to restore and maintain the graves and memorials to those who earned the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour. We also restore military memorials to those who served their country through numerous conflicts, completing over 300 in the last 18 months.
“By visiting schools and professional groups, we also help to educate the public in their stories to ensure their names are not forgotten.”
Rugby’s connection with service
Rugby has a long and proud connection with military history, with many players serving their country during times of conflict.
During the First World War, 133 international rugby players lost their lives, including four members of England’s Five Nations-winning scrum from 1914. Among them was Ronnie Poulton-Palmer, who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
These stories reflect the values that continue to unite rugby and the Victoria Cross Trust today – courage, commitment and looking after those who came before us.
